To hem or not to hem?

As Ive said before I love vintage dresses. Particularly 50s style knee length dresses. My only problem is standing at 5 feet tall every dress I look at is longer than desired so brings my question for today, How do you feel about hemming vintage dresses? Do you believe it adds to the dress or ruins its integrity?

  1. If you don't want to hem, you must wear really, really high heels.

Typically, I prefer to hem, I just feel that shorter is more flattering, but if the whole look of the dress would be altered, then just stick with the heels.

  2. I have read in a vintage collecting book that changes to the hem less than 4 inches in length are considered "alterations" whereas any greater changes in length are considered redesigning or restyling the garment. Not sure if that helps put things in perspective or not. Vintage is best when rocked out, so if shorter makes you feel hotter, go for it. (I hem or will ask my grandma to do so for all my 50s knee lengths because I am also short).

  3. Thank you thats a great clarification! I never want to ruin the integrity of a vintage piece so its great to know the difference between alteration and redesign. =)
